The Department of Language Studies invites applications for a Postdoctoral position in Educational Work (focused on language and learning), Language Teaching and Learning, Linguistics (English, General, Russian, Sami or Scandinavian), Literature (English, Russian or Spanish), or Sami Studies.

The Department of Language Studies was formed is 2008 and is now an established center for innovative research across the traditional disciplines of linguistics, Scandinavian languages, modern languages and literatures (English, Finnish, French, German, Russian, Spanish), the Sami languages and cultures, Language Teaching and Learning, and Educational Work focused on language and learning. The department has a wide range of research networks. They include CogLing Umu, LITUM, Medical Humanities, Muntlig språkfärdighet, Lärmiljö och undervisning, and Special Education). There is ongoing collaboration between researchers in Sami languages and cultures and the Centre for Sami Research Vaartoe as well as between researchers who focus on Global Challenges, or Northern Studies.

The employment is for a period of two years, full-time. It starts on October  1st, 2018, or upon agreement.

We particularly welcome interdisciplinary projects aligned with more than one of the advertised research areas: Educational Work (focused on language and learning), Language Teaching and Learning, Linguistics (English, General, Russian, Sami or Scandinavian), Literature (English, Russian or Spanish), and Sami Studies.

Qualifications
Applicants who have received a PhD or the foreign equivalent of a PhD in, or relevant to, one or more of the advertised research areas, are eligible for the position. A precondition is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a postdoc at Umeå University for more than a year within the same, or equivalent discipline. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. The candidates who have completed their degree prior to this time period may be taken into consideration if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade union organizations or similar circumstances.

In the selection of the eligible candidates, it is also taken into consideration both that the outlined project has a clear interdisciplinary approach related to two or more of the advertised research areas  and that the project is clearly related to one or more research environments in the Department of Language Studies.

Terms of employment
The employment is for two years, full-time. It primarily involves research, and the Post doctor is expected to take an active part in the development of the research environment . It may involve teaching up to a maximum of 20 percent of a full-time position.

  • Research plan – must not exceed 30 000 characters including spaces – that contains: purpose and research problem, previous research, implementation: that is, method, material and theory, relevance and time plan.
  • A cover letter explaining why the candidate is interested in the position, and that clearly specifies which research area(s), and which research network(s) the proposed research project may be aligned to.
