The department of Physics at Umeå University ( conducts strong research in the areas of organic electronics, condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, photonics and theoretical physics. 

The Department of Physics is looking for a PhD student in theoretical plasma physics for a project aimed at dense plasmas and laser-plasma interaction.

Project Description
The selected candidate will work within the group of theoretical plasma physics. The Ph. D projected will be devoted to studies of plasmas at high densities, and high intensities. This includes model development for degenerate and partially degenerate plasmas, as well as analysis of laser plasma interaction at relativistic intensities. Model development concern phenomena such as e.g. exchange effects in plasmas, spin-polarization and spin-orbit interaction. Analysis of laser-plasma interaction will be targeted towards problem involving ion acceleration.

Within the project, theoretical analysis will involve various transform methods, multiple time-scale methods and perturbation theory. Numerical and simulation methods based on e.g. Particle-In-Cell codes may also be part of the project.

As a PhD student, you will be active in research, study doctoral courses, and possibly participate in teaching of courses at undergraduate level. The aim with the PhD studies is a doctoral degree. Financing time is limited to four years. The position is full time. Up to 20 % of the employment can consist of teaching such as e.g. lab supervision. The corresponding time is in such cases added to the total available time (up to maximum five years). 

Competence requirements
The successful candidate should hold a master degree (or equivalent) in physics or engineering physics. Courses and other experience (e.g. a thesis project) in plasma physics, quantum mechanics and related fields will be seen as an advantage. Knowledge of numerical and simulation methods are also beneficial. The candidate should be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently as well as a part of the research group. The applicant is required to be fluent in both oral and written English.

To be admitted for studies at third-cycle level the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad or equivalent qualifications.

To fulfill the specific entry requirements to be admitted for studies at third-cycle level within the subject of theoretical physics, the applicant is required to have completed courses within the field of physics comprising at least 120 ECTS credits.

The requirements must be fulfilled at the time of approval to the PhD position and does not need to be fulfilled at the time of the application.
