Postdoctoral researcher in Sociology or related fields with focus on intergroup relations

The Department of Sociology is hiring a postdoc (2 years) focusing on intergroup relations research (development of attitudes and friendships).

The Department of Sociology hosts undergraduate and postgraduate programs. We presently have 50 employees, including 15 PhD students and 2 postdocs. Research within the department covers a variety of areas, where one of the prominent fields is research on intergroup relations.

The postdoctoral project focuses on research questions relating to the following themes:

  • To examine the longitudinal development of intergroup attitudes and friendships in adolescence.

  • To examine the longitudinal effects of personality (such as empathy) and social contexts (such as parents, peers, and school) among majority and minority youth.

The project is quantitative and based on an existing longitudinal database. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and carrying out research in collaboration with the research leader for this project at the Department of Sociology. The postdoctoral position is for a 24-month period.

In order to be qualified for the position, the person must have achieved a doctoral degree in Sociology or other relevant discipline on or after 2014-11-01. Parental leave, sick leave, military service etc. may push this date back. The applicant should not previously have held a postdoc position at Umeå University.

The main assessment criteria for the appointment are documented research skills and academic track record. Applicants must be able to analyze longitudinal data and speak and write English fluently. The person appointed is to carry out the job on location in Umeå, and is expected to participate in common departmental activities.

Application should contain:

  • a complete CV, including list of publications
  • research plan (max. 5 pages), including a problem description, aim, methods, and a discussion of the relevance of the research
  • the applicant's doctoral thesis and a maximum of three other publications

The employment starts December 2017 or as agreed. Applications must be submitted electronically using the e-recruitment system Varbi, and be received no later than November 30, 2017
