Umeå University, Department of Computing Science

The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University ( is seeking an outstanding candidate for a post-doctoral researcher position in resource management for cloud and edge computing environments.

The last date for application is 2017-06-15.

The recruited postdoc will be part of a large, dynamic, and well established research group comprised of more than 20 people from more than 10 different countries. The group works in close collaboration with leading research institutes such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), IMDEA (Spain), and the Lund Center for Control of Complex Engineering Systems (Sweden); as well as with major industrial partners such as Intel Labs, Ericsson, SAP, Red Hat, and IBM. Software is contributed to various open source community efforts including, e.g., NorduGrid/ARC, the Globus Toolkit, and Open Stack.

Project description
Today’s large-scale software systems are developed and deployed as distributed applications where software components are dynamically migrated within and between data centers. To maintain acceptable levels of performance in these systems, optimized control systems that model, monitor, and control applications are used.

The position is funded by a project (RECAP) focused on resource management in large-scale distributed edge and cloud computing environments and reliable provisioning of distributed (service-based) applications. A mix of cloud and telecommunications infrastructure are used to offer end-users and application systems increased reliability and improved performance for applications. The research tasks of the position will be focused on research in modeling, development, and analysis of resource management systems for distributed applications that dynamically migrate components within and between data centers.

Possible research topics for the position include, e.g.,

  • design and analysis of systems for automated modeling and analysis of application architectures and workloads, including formulation of algorithms for detection and classification of workload patterns
  • modeling of performance and load propagation in distributed applications
  • optimization of service placement in edge computing environments
  • development of adaptive models for autonomous service remediation

The positions are intended for post-doctoral research to be performed jointly with senior researchers and PhD students in the group, as well as with our national and international collaboration partners. Coordination tasks within large-scale projects may also be included.

The appointment is for two years full-time employment. The employment will start 2017-10-01, or as otherwise agreed. The position comes with a competitive salary and (non-mandatory) opportunities for teaching (up to 20% of full-time).

Ideal candidates are research driven, organized, and would like to work on challenging problems and innovative solutions.

Applicants must have earned a PhD or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD in Computer Science or a related subject relevant for the position. Insights into systems modelling and knowledge of distributed architectures are required. The PhD degree should not be more than three years old by the application deadline without extenuating circumstances.

Strong research merits and excellent publications in the area of the position are highly meriting. Demonstrated skills in statistical or machine learning, mathematical optimization, or software development are also considered merits. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.

A complete application should include:

  • Introductory letter including a 2-page statement of research interests relative to the above topics and a motivation of why your expertise is appropriate for the position
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a complete list of scientific publications
  • Copies of degree certificates, including documentation of completed academic courses and obtained grades
  • A copy of your PhD thesis.
  • Copies of (max 5) original research publications relevant to the above topics, numbered according to the publication list.
  • Names and contact information for three persons willing to act as references
  • Any other information relevant for the position such as description of software development experience, or previous industry experience.

Please observe that all material needs to be in Swedish or English. If material is submitted in other languages a translation to Swedish or English must be included.

Welcome with your application
Applications must be submitted electronically using the e-recruitment system MyNetwork Pro, and be received no later than June 15, 2017. Reference number AN 2.2.1-819-17.

Further information
The research is performed in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) and the UMIT research laboratory at Umeå University. HPC2N is a member center of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) and provides competence and computing resources, including grid and cloud resources, and actively participates in Swegrid, NDGF, NorduGrid, and EGEE. UMIT is an environment for interdisciplinary research in scientific, high-performance, distributed, real-time, and visual computing.
