The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Umeå University is currently seeking a First Research Engineer to be recruited for a technical support function responsible for operation and performance of structural biology analyzes with advanced Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), direct Electron Detector and Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB-SEM) instruments. The appointment is two years, with possibilities for extension, starting June 2017 or by agreement and is financed with the support from SciLifeLab.

At Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy (UCEM; http://www.kbc.umu.se/english/ucem), one of the joint faculty research infrastructures at Umeå University, is a new facility for cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM). The facility is a node in the national cryo-EM establishment included in SciLifeLab platform for Cellular and Molecular Imaging (https://www.scilifelab.se/facilities/cryo-em/). The node in Umeå is financed by equipment and operating grants from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Kempe Foundations, Umeå University and SciLifeLab.The cryo-EM initiative is administered within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), a centre for research with affiliation to both Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University.

 

 Work tasks

The position means that you will provide researchers with expert advice in planning and implementation of the cryo-EM experiments, sample preparation, EM operation and image analysis, mainly in medical and biological research. Duties include responsibility for cryo-EM maintenance and method development, independent planning and implementation of analyzes by cryo-EM instruments, evaluation of data, image analyzes, as well as compiling reports. You will maintain and monitor the daily operation of the instruments and serve as a link between users, facility and instrument suppliers' service. You will take responsibility for the technical development, user training and service at the facility

Qualifications

You have a PhD in engineering, science or medicine. You have extensive interest and theoretical knowledge about electron microscopy. The tasks require practical experience in service, and/or research infrastructure/facility work, especially in structural, cellular and molecular biology research. You have experience in electron microscopy, very good computer skills and experience with Linux and software for 3D visualization is a particular advantage. You are well organized, have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a team. Great emphasis is placed on technical competence, experience in electron microscopy and a personal motivation to work in research. Ability to communicate well in written and spoken English is required.

We are looking for a co-worker who goal oriented, service minded and educational. You take initiative and can independently take responsibility for experimental work and the presentation of results. Experience of cryo-EM technique and methods, image analysis and / or molecular and structural biology analysis is desirable, especially cryo-EM 3D reconstruction, tomography and / or so-called "single particle" methodology is a plus.
