The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is seeking to employ a research engineer in extremal combinatorics and/or discrete probability. The position is full-time for 24 months, with a starting date to be agreed on by the successful applicant and the department. Last application date is 2017-04-09.

Duties and responsibilities
You will work in extremal combinatorics and/or discrete probability as part of a research project on extremal problems for hypergraphs and discrepancy financed by the Swedish Research Council. More specifically, you will read and present research papers, work on solving mathematical problems, carrying out proof strategies and theoretical calculations, and help prepare results for publication in the form of research articles. If you have the relevant programming skills you may also be asked to implement algorithms and perform computer-based tests.

Skills and qualifications
Applicants must hold at minimum a master’s degree in mathematics or equivalent.

A strong background in discrete mathematics, as well as excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English and the ability to work with others are required. Documented experience of work in the areas of extremal combinatorics and/or discrete probability is highly desirable. In assessing applications, a particular emphasis will be laid on skills and expertise in the fields of extremal combinatorics and/or discrete probability.

Terms of employment
The position is full-time for 24 months, with a starting date to be agreed on by the successful applicant and the department.
