Postdoc (2 years) in Mathematics Education

The Department of Science and Mathematics Education announces a postdoctoral research position in mathematics education with a focus on problem solving, reasoning and educational design. Application deadline is 2016-09-23.

 Project

Mathematics education is the study of teaching and learning in mathematics. The research at Umeå University (www.umu.se) is conducted interdisciplinary in Umeå Mathematics Education Research Centre (www.ufm.umu.se) which is the largest mathematics education research environment in the Nordic countries. The postdoc will be part of the ongoing research project "Learning by imitative and Creative Reasoning" (LICR) that consists of several parallel studies (www.ufm.umu.se/forskning). It is well known that mathematics teaching is too focussed on rote learning of facts and procedures, which are effective in the short term but long-term inefficient. The LICR project is studying if and how teaching which to a larger extent include creative problem solving and students' own construction of mathematical knowledge can lead to better learning.

Qualifications

Qualified are those who have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctorate. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their doctorate at most three years before the application deadline, unless there are special reasons.

The candidate must be able to conduct research both independently and in collaboration with others and be able to write scientific publications. Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required. Swedish skills and experience in teaching mathematics or mathematics education-related activities is an advantage. Experience of research in mathematics education linked to related fields such as problem solving, reasoning, conceptual understanding and the design of learning activities and teaching materials is an advantage.

 Assessment criteria

Selection of candidates is based primarily on scientific skills according to the qualifications. Secondly, the selection is based on pedagogical, administrative and other relevant qualifications.

Duties

The postdoc will, in collaboration with other project participants, take part in all research phases: planning, experimental design, data collection, analysis and scientific writing. The multidisciplinary research is based on both mathematics education and cognitive perspectives and involves various qualitative and quantitative approaches, with special emphasis on design research. The postdoc is also expected to actively participate in the department's research environment. The position is full-time for two years. The starting date is decided by agreement.

Application

Applications must include:

1 A personal letter summarizing your qualifications and areas of expertise and your interest in the position (maximum two pages).

2 A Curriculum Vitae including date of the doctoral degree, previous academic appointments, academic title, current position, academic awards, and committee assignments.

3 Full list of publications. Copies of (maximum 10) scientific publications.

4 Short summary of current research (one page maximum).

5 Diplomas and certificates of absence due to sickness leave, parental leave etc.

6 Name and contact information of two reference persons.

If you are applying for several positions with different registration numbers, you must submit a complete application, as suggested above, for each position.

Application must be made through e-recruitment system MyNetwork Pro and be received no later than 2016-09-23.
