The Department of Molecular Biology

The Department of Molecular Biology belongs to both the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Medicine. It provides a vibrant and international environment with about 175 employees from 37 countries. The department's main tasks are research and postgraduate education, basic education and collaboration with the surrounding society. We are now looking for a research engineer for a fixed-term employment of one year fulltime. Last application date is August 7, 2019.

Projekt description and work tasks

You will join a research team that is part of the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), which is internationally well-connected through the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Nordic Partnership for Molecular Medicine. The research group seeks to understand how malaria parasites are transmitted by mosquitoes.

You will work with routine technical support for our important genetic screenings in a malaria model in rodents during a significant part of the working hours. You will assist members of the research group in identifying gene function for malaria parasite transfer to mosquitoes. The work includes molecular cloning and experimental alteration of DNA, preparation of DNA or RNA sequencing libraries, and culture and dissection of mosquitoes. You will also perform work to genetically alter malaria parasites. The work is done under supervision.

You will help maintain the public order and safety of the laboratory.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • A Master's degree in molecular biology or biotechnology, or equivalent.
  • Be able to demonstrate understanding of different genetic modification methods.
  • Experience of following instructions from the superior to follow the protocol and implement procedures with accuracy and have good ability to carefully document the data.
  • Excellent ability to work in teams and to communicate verbally and in writing in English within the research group.
  • At least 6 months of experience in molecular cloning and experimental genetics.
  • Experience of growing mammalian cells
  • Laboratory safety experience.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience of Western blot analysis and genetic alteration of bacterial genome with Gibson assembly and recombinase-mediated DNA technology.
  • Practical experience and good knowledge of "reverse genetics" techniques, such as CRISPR.
